Woodstock Music & Arts Fair

The Woodstock Music & Arts Fair, most commonly referred to as "Woodstock" occurred from August 15-18, 1969 on a dairy farm in Bethel, New York. During the rainy weekend, 32 acts performed for almost half a million attendees, even into the early hours of the morning. See the complete schedule here.

S-ART-urday (Art Museum Day)

In conjunction with International Museum Day, today is Art Museum Day

International Museum Day

International Museum Day was established by the International Council of Museums in 1977 to encourage public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society. International Museum Day is organized on or around May 18th each year. Last year, 32,000 museums from 129 countries participated in International Museum Day. Approximately 125 museums in the United States celebrated Art Museum Day by offering free admission or special programs. Click here to see which art museums in your area are hosting special events today.

What museums have you visited recently?

S-ART-urday (Kentuck Festival of the Arts)

The Kentuck Festival of the Arts is a lovely festival in Northport, Alabama that is regionally and nationally recognized.  It was named one of the USA’s Top Ten Art Fairs and Festivals and is currently in it's 41st year.  Over 270 artists come for a weekend in Kentuck Park each third weekend in October (also the same weekend of a lovely little football rivalry).  Check out some of the artists here and the festival program here.

I visited the festival Sunday with Callie Ann.   We ate lots of good festival food (fried catfish, kettle corn and sno cones) and bought a few prints by the adorable Yvonne Miller.

1Canoe2 is a best friend duo from Missouri.  Carrie Shryock and Beth Snyder create letterpress works from a big red barn in Missouri.  Read more about their process and their journey as friends here.  Check out some of my favorites from their print collections:

S-ART-urday (Chuck Close)

Check out Chuck Close, a photorealist who does massive scale portraits. Seriously, these are crazy good.  They look so much like real portraits.  Even after a spinal artery collapse in 1988 that left him paralyzed, he still continues to create beautiful works.

S-ART-urday, a little early (Molly Mattin on Etsy)

I have been a little behind in my S-ART-urday posts, so here's a S-ART-urday on Thursday.
(Everybody's working for the weekend; we're almost there!)

Check out Molly Mattin.  Her funky colorful states are awesome, and her prints are very reasonably priced! One of the best parts: If you don't see your hometown, just let her know, and she will add it!

S-ART-urday (Jean-Michel Basquiat)

I love Basquiat. Read more about him here. He died too soon at the age of 27.  He worked with another of my favorite artists, Andy Warhol. More on him later.

S-ART-urday (Eric Carle)

1. I am now in library school with many people aspiring to be children's librarians. (Roll Tide.)
2. My little sister is an elementary education major at LSU. (Boo Tigers).
1+2 = my renewed interest in children's books.

I have started keeping my eye out for children's books I can buy my sister for her future classroom.  I got quite a few at an end of semester book sale for great prices and picked up a few more while shopping at Kohl's after Christmas through the Kohl's Cares program, which sells kid-friendly merchandise and uses 100 percent of the net profit donated to support kids' health and education initiatives in communities worldwide.  Eric Carle books were for sale, and I picked up two.  I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the collage illustrations of Eric Carle as a child.  If you've forgotten too, allow me to remind you.

I am not affiliated with Kohl's in any way and they did not endorse this post.  All opinions are my own.

Scrapbooking Fail

Today was my first day home for the holidays, and I decided to do a little crafting, making coasters out of tiles for some Christmas presents.  See similar project here
I needed some craft glue for my project and ran to Wal-Mart last night.  As I was strolling around the craft aisles, what did I see:

If any of you have had success scrapbooking with plates and flatware, please share your results.
Scrapbooking fail, Wal-Mart, scrapbooking fail.

S-ART-urday

S-ART-urday is a series I would like to post weekly that focuses on art: DIY art, famous artists, struggling artists, art that inspires me, anything related to art.  If you have suggestions, let me know!

A fun craft project for over the holidays

Use different size circle punches then start gluing combinations together.  You can stick with one color scheme if you'd like or use all sorts of colors.  The best part is the paint chips are free at your local hardware store and this project is eco-friendly.

Thanks Allison at the 3 R's blog for sharing!
